Today as I write this, we are standing in a heavy cosmic current. So all I could do was recognize an opportunity for a few minutes of escape: a perfectly timed storm! I grabbed my pack of pixie sticks and my magic fire starter, walked right out into a rolling, flashing, hail-pelting thunderstorm under my gazebo shelter, and let the elements build a fortress of solitude around me. I was throwing hail weapons at the glass doors while my family screamed for me to get inside. I wasn’t being crazy. I was surviving. I was drawing a boundary in ice balls.

But this morning, the “ghost energy” was still lingering in the floorboards.

As I grabbed the broom, the mop, and the dust cloth—scents of cedar, pine, and eucalyptus filling the air to reclaim my perimeter—a generational spell completely broke wide open in my mind.

I started remembering my mother.

When I was a child, at the end of every week, my mom would hit an emotional and mental limit that she herself could not understand. It made her feel completely unhinged. Where most kids were excited for Saturday morning cartoons and the Sunday newspaper comic strips, my siblings and I would be bracing for one hell of a cleaning rampage. Mom would be yelling, screaming, ordering, and demanding—think Mommie Dearest—lashing out at us while we did the heavy lifting of all that built-up crap from the week.

We’d be washing baseboards, scrubbing the insides of drawers, and vacuuming between the mattresses every single week. She wasn’t able to help much, falling over the hearth threshold, weighed down and completely crushed by the weight of it all. Her own physical body was completely weakened, becoming paralyzed by the sensory shutdown. And, of course, Dad would always find an excuse not to be home until late evenings on the weekends.

I look back now with the eyes of a Crone, and I see the absolute truth: She wasn’t crazy. She was over-sensitized.

She was a highly tuned antenna living in a loud, busy world without a user manual. The “lint” wasn’t imaginary. It was the heavy, clinging, frantic psychic static of everyone else’s footprints, moods, and noise settling onto the physical walls of her sanctuary. She didn’t realize where the energy was coming from subconsciously, so she pinned it down the only way she knew how: she weaponized the broom. She forced the environment to clear so her nervous system could finally breathe. But she was left carrying the suffocating shame of thinking she was broken.

It didn’t help that when my dad would get angry, he’d throw weapons with his words, shouting statements like, “Your crazy ass sitting around picking imaginary lint off the walls!”

If I could go back in time, knowing what I know now, I would look her dead in the eyes and take that heavy, insane label off her back. I’d scrub her tub for her and say, “I see the lint, Mama. It’s real. You aren’t imagining the weight of it. Go wash the world out of your hair, blow your nose, breathe the fresh air, and let me carry the broom for a minute.”

I’m old enough now to realize that our hairs act as antennas, and our skin reads our environments through the barely detectable clinging dust and lint of life.

Case in point: I found myself scrubbing the shower walls, mid-lather today, while I was washing my own hair! We have to rinse the static off and out of our crowns, or we can end up going into shutdown, lashing out at the ones we love and care about so much.

I have a son who walks in these exact same Shamanic, hyper-sensitive footsteps today, drowning in the invisible dust and wondering why he feels the burn. And I know my sister and brother are still carrying some of the weight and echoes of the blast radius of our mother’s un-mapped storms. I hope this helps to make it easier to understand some of the generational madness that we all experience in this game we call life and love.

This isn’t just housekeeping. This is ancestral scripture. The shouting wasn’t random cruelty; it was the desperate survival mechanism of an over-sensitized lineage drowning in the noise.

You are not broken for needing the quiet. You are not crazy for feeling the weight of the room. The static is real. Clean the space, rinse your crown, and give yourself permission to breathe.

Life absolutely isn’t fair to anyone.

Some of my very first memories are of me standing beside the bed I shared with my sister on a cold, wet night, wearing a soaked nightgown, crying and apologizing for peeing the bed. She would always get frustrated and grossed-out as she pulled the sheets off the mattress and dealt with the mess, telling me to stop crying and be quiet before I woke them up.

Them. Our parents.

Seeing her sheer terror and fear of “them” was always enough for me to stifle my sobs. My sister was the only mother and protective figure that my brother and I knew at that time. She fed us, cleaned us, taught us how to use a toothbrush, and no doubt even taught us how to wipe our own butts.

She was only nine years old when I was first slung into her arms—a crying, scrawling baby. Our parents just screamed at her to do something, to just get me to stop crying. From that day onward, she did everything she knew how to do to stop the crying. Her own childhood was completely erased the day I was born. If she got invited to a friend’s sleepover, she wasn’t allowed to go until I was fast asleep, and she was required to be back home before I woke up the next morning.

I was six years old when she finally left home. She was fifteen, pregnant, and getting married.

When she packed her things, I was absolutely terrified. I begged her, I cried, and I pleaded with her to take me and my brother with her. She would take her belongings and put them into the trunk of her husband’s car, and while they were walking back out of the house with more, I would pass right by them with an armload, carrying her stuff right back inside.

We laugh at that memory now. But at the time, it wasn’t funny. I was too young to realize how much harder I was making it for her to do what she had to do just to survive. She was only fifteen, scared for herself, and absolutely terrified for me because she knew I was being left entirely to myself.

I wasn’t used to sleeping in a bed without her. I wasn’t used to dressing myself, or doing anything else for that matter, not by myself. I quickly learned not to play with any toys I had, just in case I forgot to put them away, and I learned never to try to get my own clothes from the drawers. If I made any kind of mess, she used to be the one who took the blame and the punishment for it. Now, she wasn’t there. I was so afraid to do anything that would give them a cause to yell or hit again.

The universe has a strange, fierce way of looping its stories, though. Because three years later, the baton got handed straight down the line. I became the stand-in mom for my sister’s children.

I was nine years old, trying to figure out what you’re supposed to do when a nine-month-old baby finger-paints themselves with poop from their diaper. (We really did evolve from monkeys!) I also found myself on mile-long bike rides, collecting pop bottles to cash in for pocket change to buy some of those diapers and food. When my sister’s husband left, she needed help. By that time, there were three babies. When she turned to our parents for support, they only knew how to repeat the old story.

So, I spent my childhood doing exactly what my sister had done for me. I was the big sister, the aunt, and the stand-in mom while my sister worked a full-time job and went to college full-time. She would make it home around 1:00 AM and be up and gone again by 5:00 AM every single day.

As for me, I got to discover all kinds of ways to function in adult mode without the help of the actual adults in my family. I discovered it was much easier to ask a neighbor for a couple of slices of bread or a few crackers—anything they could spare—instead of trying to call my parents, only to hear: “How dare you put me and your dad through this!”

When my sister found out I had reached out to them—and of course she did—she simply said, “Please don’t do that again.” It brought back the full, terrifying remembrance of, Oh shit, I did it again. I got her in trouble. My parents were from a generation that judged anyone on public assistance as trash, lazy, good-for-nothings, and they had no problem ordering us to never humiliate them by seeking help.

Because of that, I also learned how to get around the need of having my parents handle my school stuff, like signing report cards and writing absence notes. There were quite a few absences; when one of the kids was sick, I couldn’t just leave them, and we had no phone to call anyone.

The first time I wrote my own absence note and signed it, the principal thought it was a joke. Of course, he was going to get to the bottom of the matter.

“I’m calling your parents,” he told me. I just looked at him and said, “Okay, go ahead. Call them.”

He got the exact same response I always got from them. “How dare you harass me on my job!”—add in a few other choice words, and then—click.

Once they realized what was happening, the school actually helped me work around many of the issues I faced. They helped me with transportation and altered the school bus routes just to get me home on time to the babies. A lot of the teachers would stop me in passing to ask if everything was okay, or if I needed anything for the kids or myself. When I was too tired and couldn’t stay awake in class, they never bothered me. They just let me rest until the bell rang, then they would wake me up, hand me the assignment, and say, “When you can, just bring it back to me.”

By the time I was sixteen, my sister had earned her first degree and was able to move into a better-paying job with daytime hours, meaning she could finally be home with her kids at night. She also quietly broke the rigid dogma and rules of our parents; she applied for public assistance and got the help she actually needed—food stamps and after-school care for the kids.

It was a massive relief for me, because it was finally my turn to leave home. I was stressed and worried for her and the kids, but she did me a beautiful favor and made it easier for me to go. She reassured me that they were going to be okay. The kids cried and kept asking why I had to leave, but I reassured them I was only ever one phone call away.

Looking back now, I was never the little girl who cared about playing with baby dolls. I didn’t have the white-picket-fence and white-knight-in-shining-armor fantasy where I would someday have children of my own. I was the one who dreamed of the day I would finally be free from all of it. I never wanted to have kids. And my sister? She didn’t have any toys or baby dolls either, and I don’t think she ever dreamed or wished for the day she would become a mother.

Yet, one of my fondest memories is of seeing my niece sitting on the floor years later. She was safe. She wasn’t looking over her shoulder, and she wasn’t afraid to make a mess. She was just playing with her baby dolls, dreaming about being a mom someday.

She grew up spending her teenage years hiring herself out as a babysitter. One of her very first jobs was managing a daycare center while going to college to earn her degrees. Her dreams came true, and she is a wonderful mom today.

I can smile now, knowing she got to be a kid. The fire stopped with me and my sister, and a hearth was born.

Jumping forward some years, my sister became very successful in her career, earned her master’s degree, remarried, and her kids grew up to have families of their own. But she did carry the bitterness and open wounds of those childhood memories with her. She kept her distance from our family, and to be real about it, I can’t say that I blame her.

As for me? I ended up living two houses up the street from my parents. I got to meet the older versions of them. And to be completely honest, they were still just messed-up little children stuck in old bodies, needing someone to be a stand-in, refereeing parent for them. And yes... that ended up being me.

I could end this memory and story right here. I could make it sound like life suddenly turned into rainbow sprinkles and fairy farts—but that would be a lie. This was only the start of a new session, and a major upgrade in the school of hard knocks.

I know I’m leaving you with the impression that we had the world’s worst parents, but that is only true if you choose to look at it that way. And that... is a story for another time.
